Etymology[edit]

From earlier Modern Dutch wisconst (literally art of what is known). Equivalent to wis +‎ -kunde. Purism introduced by Simon Stevin in the 16th century to replace the Dutch word mathematica which was a borrowing from Latin mathematica.
