From Proto-Slavic *zoltъ (golden), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰelh₃-. Cognate with Upper Sorbian złoty, Polish złoty, Czech zlatý, Serbo-Croatian zlátan, and Russian золото́й (zolotój).
