Etymology

Uncertain. The earliest attestations have /i/. The oscillation between /t/ and /d/ could imply the phoneme arose epenthetically to avoid a sibilant-liquid cluster.

1. Possibly from Vulgar Latin *subrūpere (“to bring down”) vel sim., compare Romanian surpa, surupa, Aromanian surpu, sãrup, surup.
2. Alternatively a derivation from hip, hyp (“to go up”), though the negatory prefixes involved are unclear.

Similarity with dialectal zdroj (“to fall”), a variant of rrëzoj (“to fall”), is most likely coincidental.
