German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German zesamene, zesamne, zesamen, from Old High German zisamane. Analyzable as zu- (to) +‎ sammen (“together”, now archaic as a simplex); the latter from Proto-Germanic *samana, from Proto-Indo-European *sem- (together, one).

The same construct is Dutch tezamen with its contraction samen (from Middle Dutch tsamen). Also related with Scots samin (together), Danish sammen, Swedish samman.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /tsuˈzamən/, [tsuˈzamən], [tsuˈzamm̩] (standard)
  • IPA(key): /tsəˈzamən/ (colloquial variant)
  • IPA(key): /ˈtsam(ən)/ (Bavaria, Austria; chiefly colloquial)
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: zu‧sam‧men
