Etymology
[edit]Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *med- (“to measure”) and cognate with Ancient Greek μέδομαι (médomai, “to provide for”), Latin modus (“measure; manner”) and Proto-Germanic *mētō (“measure”). According to Beekes, from Pre-Greek because of the presence of the cluster "-μν-".
