Etymology[edit]

From χίλιοι (khílioi, thousand) +‎ ἄρχω (árkhō, to rule). Calque of Old Median *Hazahrapati- (commander of thousand [men]),[1][2] from *hazahra- (thousand) + *pati- (lord, master).
