Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *bermenьnъ; morphologically, from бере́мя (berémja) +‎ -енный (-ennyj). Cognate with Polish brzemienny (burdened), Macedonian бремен (bremen), Bulgarian бременен (bremenen), Serbo-Croatian бремѐнит / Serbo-Croatian bremènit; compare also Czech březí (gravid, pregnant [animals only]).
