[edit]Inherited from Old East Slavic золото (zoloto), from Proto-Slavic *zolto, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰolh₃tom (o-grade), from *ǵʰelh₃- (“yellow; gleam; to shine”). Doublet of зла́то (zláto), borrowed from Old Church Slavonic злато (zlato). Compare Ukrainian золото (zoloto), Belarusian золата (zólata), Bulgarian and Macedonian злато (zlato), Czech, Serbo-Croatian, Slovene, and Slovak zlato, Polish, Kashubian, Lower Sorbian, and Upper Sorbian złoto, Polabian zlåtă.
