From Proto-Slavic *kupъ, *kupa, from Proto-Indo-European *kowp-. Cognate with Lithuanian kaupas, Albanian qipi, Old High German houf, Old Irish cúan, Old English hēap, Old Saxon hōp. Compare Old Norse hópr.
