Borrowed from Russian ру́сло (rúslo). Morphologically equivalent to ру́ша (rúša, to trample) (dialectal) +‎ -сло (-slo).

Presumably related to Lithuanian rusė́ti (to flow), rusnóti (to flow slowly). Compare the name of the Lithuanian river Raũsvė, and Rusnìs, a right distributary of the Neman.
