From Middle Persian or Parthian *ābrēk possibly via Classical Syriac ܐܒܪܝܩܐ (ʾaḇrēqā), attested as Classical Persian آبریز (ābrēz) from آب (âb, water) + the present stem of the verb ریختن (rêxtan, to pour). Compare Northern Kurdish avrêjk (ewer).
