Assyrian Neo-Aramaic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Aramaic אִנְתְּתָא (ʾintəṯā), from Proto-Semitic *anṯat-; compare Arabic أُنْثَى (ʔunṯā), Hebrew אִשָּׁה (ishá), Akkadian 𒁮 (DAM /aššatu/) and Ugaritic 𐎀𐎘𐎚 (ʾaṯt).
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]ܐܲܢ݇ܬܬ݂ܵܐ • (atṯā) f (plural ܢܸܫܹ̈ܐ (niššē) or ܐܸܢ̈ܫܹܐ (inšē), masculine ܓܲܒ݂ܪܵܐ (gaḇrā))
Usage notes
[edit]- ܒܲܟ݂ܬܵܐ (baḵtā) has displaced the word ܐܲܢ݇ܬܬ݂ܵܐ (atṯā), however the plural ܢܸܫܹ̈ܐ (niššē) also used in formal contexts, and ܐܸܢܫܹ̈ܐ (inšē) is still the common plural in many dialects in place of ܒܲܟ݂ܬܵܬ݂ܹ̈ܐ (baḵtāṯē).
