[edit]Inherited from Prakrit 𑀆𑀯𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀸 (āvattā), syncopated from earlier 𑀆𑀬𑀯𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀸 (āyavattā), from Sanskrit आतपत्रा (ātapatrā, “shade; sunshade; umbrella”), from आतप (ātapa, “heat; sunlight”) + त्रा (trā, “protector”), with the first element from आ- (ā-) + तप (tapa, “heat, sun”); for the second element, see त्रातृ (trātṛ).
