Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Middle Bengali জাহান পনাহ (jahan ponah), from Classical Persian جهان‌پناه (jahān-panāh, refuge of the world); equivalent to জাহান (jahan) +‎ পনাহ (ponah). In the Indian subcontinent, the word became an honorific for the Muslim ruler.
