Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Middle Bengali জাহান পনাহ (jahan ponah), from Classical Persian جهانپناه (jahān-panāh, “refuge of the world”); equivalent to জাহান (jahan) + পনাহ (ponah). In the Indian subcontinent, the word became an honorific for the Muslim ruler.
