Etymology[edit]
Coined in 1747 with the establishment of 緬寧廳, which was converted from 孟緬長官司, established in 1430. The 緬/缅 (miǎn) in 緬寧 was likely taken from 孟緬/孟缅 (alternatively written as 猛緬/猛缅), which is a transcription of the name of the place in a Tai language (compare Tai Nüa ᥛᥫᥒᥰ ᥛᥦᥢᥰ (möeng mäen)).
