Etymology[edit]

The name was given by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing dynasty in 1763. The name of the city was reverted back to 烏魯木齊乌鲁木齐 (Wūlǔmùqí) in 1954 in the People's Republic of China as 迪化 (Díhuà, literally “to enlighten and civilize”) was deemed condescending to the ethnic minorities in the region.
