Inherited from Proto-Turkic *(y)igne (needle); cognate with Azerbaijani iynə, Bashkir энә (enə), Chuvash йӗп (jĕp), Crimean Tatar iyne, Kazakh ине (ine), Kyrgyz ийне (iyne), Turkmen iňňe, Uyghur يىڭنە (yingne) and Uzbek igna.
