Etymology [edit]
A derivation of جمهور (jumhūr, “crowd, public”), coined as a translation of republic / res publica with the rise of Pan-Arabism during World War I. An Arab Jumhuriya was proclaimed in Italian-ruled Tripoli in 1919.
