هَجَا (hajā) I (non-past يَهْجُو (yahjū), verbal noun هَجْو (hajw) or هِجَاء (hijāʔ))

  1. to speak poorly of, to satirize, to dispraise or revile with words, to lampoon
    • وَكَمْ عَلَّمْتُهُ نَظْمَ الْقَوَافِي / فَلَمَّا قَالَ قَافِيَةً هَجَانِي
      wakam ʕallamtuhū naẓma l-qawāfī / falammā qāla qāfiyatan hajānī
      And how much have I taught him the organisation of rhymes / and when he spoke his rhyme, he dispraised me.
