From Aramaic חְלַף (ḥəlap̄, “to change, alter”), from Proto-Semitic *ḫalap-; compare Akkadian 𒁽 (ḫalāpum, “to slip through”), Arabic خَلَفَ (ḵalafa, “to succeed”) and Hebrew חָלַף (khaláf, “to pass by”).
