Borrowed from Classical Persian سال (sāl), from Middle Persian ŠNT (sāl), from Old Persian 𐎰𐎼𐎭 (θ-r-d), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćarHáts. Doublet of शरद् (śarad, a year). Compare Bengali সাল (śal), Marathi साल (sāl), Punjabi ਸਾਲ (sāl), Telugu సాలు (sālu).
