From Proto-Tai *ʔuːmꟲ (to carry in the arms). Cognate with Lao ອຸ້ມ (ʼum) or ອູ້ມ (ʼūm), Shan ဢုမ်ႈ (ʼūm), Ahom 𑜒𑜤𑜪 (ʼuṃ), Zhuang umj.
