Thai[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From เกลียด (glìiat, to dislike; to hate) +‎ ปลาไหล (eel) +‎ กิน (gin, to eat; to drink; to consume; etc.) +‎ น้ำ (náam, liquid; water) +‎ แกง (gɛɛng, soup); literally "to hate an eel, but still eat (an eel) soup" or "to hate an eel, but still drink the liquid from (an eel) soup", referring to the situation in which a person refuses to eat eel meat in an eel soup but still enjoys the liquid part of the soup, despite the fact that it is an eel broth.
