[edit]Pronunciation
[edit]- IPA(key): /sʰɪ̀ɴ/
- Romanization: MLCTS: hcang • ALA-LC: chaṅʻ • BGN/PCGN: hsin • Okell: hsiñ
Etymology 1
[edit]From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *tsaŋ (“elephant”), apparently borrowed from Proto-Tai *ɟaːŋꟲ, ultimately from Middle Chinese 象 (MC zjangX).

Etymology 2
[edit]Luce compares the word to Old Chinese 匠 (OC *sbaŋs, “artisan”), based on a reconstructed pronunciation *dzyaŋ;[1] however, newer reconstructions of the Old Chinese pronunciation as *s.baŋ-s make this doubtful (though said reconstructions seem to be still under debate).
