うずまき (uzumaki): a curve that is the locus of a point, that rotates about a fixed point, while continuously increasing its distance from that point.

Etymology[edit]

Compound of (uzu, whirlpool, eddy) +‎ 巻き (maki, rolling, winding).[1][2][3]

Can also be parsed as the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of verb 渦巻く (uzumaku, to swirl).

First cited to a text from roughly 953 CE.[1]
