  1. (linguistics) a borrowing, a loanword
Synonym: 外来語 (gairaigo, modern loanword, usually of European origin)

Usage notes[edit]

The term 外来語 (gairaigo) is sometimes used with a narrower meaning, indicating only those loanwords that have been borrowed mostly from European languages since the Meiji era, in contrast to the broader meaning sometimes used for 借用語 (shakuyōgo), which may also include ancient Ainu and Sanskrit borrowings and earlier Portuguese borrowings, as well as vocabulary borrowed between dialects of Japanese. However, both terms usually exclude 漢語 (kango, literally Han Chinese words), those terms originally borrowed from Middle Chinese.[1][4]
