These are uncommon kanji, the hyōgaiji (表外字) – those kanji not part of the jinmeiyō kanji (kanji approved for names) or jōyō kanji or tōyō kanji (commonly used kanji, everyday kanji) lists.

These are written in kyūjitai (traditional characters), and are seen in literature and in names of places; a few are in more general use. Sometimes called grade 9.
