Particularly: “See de.wikt: "Der Begriff geht auf den „Winkeljournalisten Schmock in Gustav Freytags Lustspiel DIE JOURNALISTEN von 1853“ zurück.", can't verify this source however. Duden says that this ultimately also comes from Yiddish.”
