ajan

  1. Genitive singular form of aika.
  2. Used postpositionally in the structure genitive of the definition of the period + ajan, which is translated into English as: during, for or throughout + definition of the period. May be omitted, if the definition of time period is exact in itself.
    kahden vuoden ajan
    during two years
    Liike oli niitä harvoja, jotka pystyivät olemaan auki sodan ajan.
    The shop was one of the few able to stay open during the war.

  • Ajan indicates that a situation or activity continued or continues during the whole of a specified length of time. To refer to an unspecified period of time or to an event that happened or happens during a specified period but at an unspecified moment, aikana may be used.
