From Old English bēċe, from Germanic *bōkjōn, a derivative of *bōkō, from Indo-European *bhagos. Cognate with Dutch beuk, German Buche, Swedish bok; and with Ancient Greek φηγός (phēgos), oak), Latin fāgus (beech), Russian бузина (elder (tree)). Compare buckwheat, book.
