From Old English bēċe, from Germanic *bōkjōn, a derivative of *bōkō, from Indo-European *bhagos. Cognate with Dutch beuk, German Buche, Swedish bok; and with Ancient Greek φηγός (phēgos), “‘oak’”), Latin fāgus (“‘beech’”), Russian бузина (“‘elder (tree)’”). Compare buckwheat, book.
