Undetermined. Possibly from Celtiberian *bruxtia (compare Catalan bruixa, Portuguese bruxa, Occitan bruèissa), from *brixta ‘spell, magic’ (compare Old Irish bricht ‘charm’, Old Breton brith ‘magic’).
