Etymology[edit]

  • Earlier, kirja meant something like "carved mark/decoration"[1] or "embroidered decoration" and some derived terms get their meaning from the former sense. In modern language embroidery is "kirjonta". The Estonian cognate kiri means "letter (to be sent)".
