Hungarian[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From nő (“woman”) + -s + -t + -n (diminutive suffixes).[1] For the cluster -s + -t, compare nyest (“marten”); for -t + -n, compare isten (“god, deity”). For the semantic shift ‘woman’ > ‘female’, compare Latin femina (“woman”) > femella (“girl; young female”).[2]
