French[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From re- +‎ devoir.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ʁə.də.vwaʁ/
  • (file)
  • Rhymes: -waʁ

Verb[edit]

redevoir

  1. to owe again
Vous me redevez cinq eurosyou owe me five euros again
  2. (rare or obsolete) to have to again

Usage notes[edit]

  • It's more usual in contemporary French to use devoir with re- in front of the verb, or use à nouveau or de nouveau.
  • The past participle redû is sometimes found, formed by analogy with the past participle of devoir (whose circumflex is present solely to distinguish the word from du).
