Etymology[edit]

From Middle English togon, from Old English *tōgān (to go apart), from Proto-Germanic *tōgāną (to go apart), equivalent to to- +‎ go. Cognate with Old High German zegān. Compare Old English tōgangan (to go away, pass away), Old Saxon tegangan.
