Usage notes[edit]

  • (to bring): The difference between tuoda and viedä is that with the former, the one who brings is perceived as coming towards the speaker (or another point of reference) with what is being brought, while with the latter, the one who brings is perceived as going away from the speaker (or another point of reference) with what is being brought; this is similar to the distinction between "coming" and "going" which also exists in Finnish (tulla, mennä). For example:
Tuo vaimollesi kukkia. (when e.g. talking to the husband who is next to his wife at the time)
Vie vaimollesi kukkia. (when e.g. talking to the husband who is not next to his wife)
    Bring your wife (some) flowers.
Voimme tuoda mökillesi puita. (while the person being spoken to is there)
Voimme viedä mökillesi puita. (while the person being spoken to is not there)
We can bring some wood to your summerhouse.
