From Old Portuguese arvor, from Latin arbor, arbōrem, from Latin arbōs, arbōsis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃erdʰ- (“high, to grow”).
Cognate with Galician árbore, Spanish árbol, Catalan arbre, Occitan arbre, French arbre, Italian albero and Romanian arbore.
