From Middle French eschauffer, from Old French eschaufer, eschalfer, from Vulgar Latin *excal(e)fāre, from Latin excalfacere, present active infinitive of excalfaciō, from ex + calfaciō, variant of calefaciō.

Ultimately related to échauder (scald) (English scald) via ex- + caleo.
