Etymology

From é- +‎ court +‎ -er, corresponding to Old French escurter. Possibly from Vulgar Latin *excurtāre, from Latin curtāre, present active infinitive of curtō. Compare Occitan escortar, Italian scortare (dialectal), Romanian scurta, Friulian scurtâ, Ladin scurter.
