Etymology

From Old Irish ord, ordd (compare Welsh gordd).

Noun

òrd m (genitive singular ùird, plural ùird or òrdan)

1. hammer

   mar fhuaim ùird ― like the noise of a hammer

2. dog-head of a gun, the part of a gunlock from which the flint strikes fire
3. piece, fragment, chunk

   Gearr 'n a òrdan e. ― Cut it in pieces.

4. stub
5. mallet, mall
6. cut, cutting

   òrd éisg ― a cut or slice of fish

7. sledgehammer
8. a short length of string
