[edit]From Ottoman Turkish اوركمك (ürkmek), from Proto-Turkic *ürk- (“to be afraid”).[1] Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (ürk-, “to be afraid, run away in fear”), Kyrgyz үркүү (ürküü, “to be frightened of”), Southern Altai ӱркӱӱр (ürküür), Uzbek hurkmoq, Kazakh үрку (ürku, “to be frightened of”), Bashkir өркөү (örköw, “to startle”).
