Etymology

    Sino-Vietnamese word from 臺灣, with 2nd element's pronunciation possibly descending from a dialectal Middle Chinese ancestor with initial *l- from Old Chinese *C.r-, instead of from *Cr- like (MC 'waen), whence Mandarin  / (wān), Cantonese  / (waan1), etc.
