đầu (head) +‎ têu; the second syllable is probably a non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese (SV: đầu), borrowed rather recently from a Sinitic lect. Compare Tōngshān Gan (tɛuA2), Méixiàn Hakka (tʰeu¹¹).
