From Proto-Balto-Slavic *ḗstei, via Winter's law from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ed- ‎(to eat). Cognates include Latvian ēst, Old Church Slavonic ꙗсти ‎(jasti), Latin edō, Ancient Greek ἔδω ‎(édō) and Old English etan (English eat).
