Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *ēstei, via Winter's law from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ed- (to eat). Cognates include Latvian ēst, Old Church Slavonic ꙗсти (jasti), Latin edō, Ancient Greek ἔδω (édō), Old English etan (whence English eat).
