Etymology

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish ایقنمق, of onomatopoeic origin. The reflexive morphology points to the unattested verb stem *ıkamak +‎ -in. Compare ıklamak ıkışmak. A hypothetical Proto-Turkic *yï̄gï̄n- (*yï̄g + *a + *-ïn-) can be proposed from the same etymon as ağlamak (Proto-Turkic *yï̄gla-). Cognate with Turkmen iginmek (i:ginmek).
