Etymology

Inherited from the Mediaeval Byzantine Greek ἀνταμείβω, from the mediopassive verb of Ancient Greek ἀνταμείβομαι (antameíbomai, give back in exchange). Morphologically, from αντ- (αντι-) (counter) +‎ αμείβω (pay, compensate). Also, stem αμοιβ- by vowel gradation.
