Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *dweynós, from *dwey- (fear); equivalent to δει- (dei-), the root of δείδω (deídō), +‎ -νος (-nos). Compare δέος (déos). Cognate with Latin dirus, Old Armenian երկն (erkn).
