From Proto-Indo-European *kwep- (“to smoke, boil, move violently”); see also Lithuanian kūpėti (“to boil over”), Old Church Slavonic кꙑпѣти (kypěti, “to boil”), Sanskrit कुप्यति (kupyati, “become agitated, bubbles up”), Latin cupiō.[1]
