From Proto-Hellenic *kərdíyā, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱr̥díyeh₂, from *ḱḗr. Cognate with Sanskrit हृदय (hṛ́daya), Latin cor, Old Armenian սիրտ (sirt), Old English heorte (whence English heart).
