Ancient Greek

[edit]

Etymology 1

[edit]

Unexplained. A basis *ὀδϝός (*odwós) enables connection with οὖδας (oûdas, ground, soil), but only if one accepts that this is a generalized Ionic form. In principle both words could be variants of the same Pre-Greek word.
